Alice Donut, “Crawlpappy” (Mule, 1990)

Crawlpappy is another sad example of a band that got love and respect by everyone who knew them, but who ultimately did not get the widespread recognition that they deserved.

This is particularly difficult to understand when you look at the list of other bands that one-time members of Crawlpappy were involved in at one time or another: Agnostic front, Absolution, Alice Donut, Helmet, Raw Deal. One would think that the fame of those bands would have rubbed off a bit more.

Musically, this evokes Sheer Terror (with whom they had a fantastic split single) and Prong circa “Beg to differ”. Sometimes grooving, sometimes sludgy, hard-rock, post-hardcore –NYHC meets Detroit Rock–… I don’t know, something like that. Good crunching guitars and nice drumming, plus the charismatic gravelly voice of Brian Childers who died much too early in November 2007, apparently of kidney failure.

“Deluxe” is quite good and I was happy to see that record pop up on a couple of other blogs recently. Copies of that you can probably still pick up for cheap through Amazon. But for me the self-titled 12” that was released on Blackout! Records and which was produced by Don Fury is really where it is at. For good measures I have also included 2 songs from a compilation (“Mentally broken Vol. 3”).

The files got a little too large for Mediafire, so I split it into 2 folders:

Crawlpappy – ST

Crawlpappy - Deluxe

It's nice to see Crawlpappy getting some attention. That EP kicks ass!

Brians untimely passing was a shock to all who knew him. RIP dude.

i recently posted Deluxe over on Shiny Grey Monotone for the very same reasons...why the fuck has this band not received the accolades they deserved?!
hail the 'pappy!

Glad to hear that there still is some love for these guys out there. But then again, you guys probably belonged to that small minority of people that I was referring to who already liked them way back then...
Gray: I am pretty sure yours was one off the blogs that I was referring to. I am a frequent visitor, occasional downloader, and horrible commenter (my apologies for that at this point).

based on my super scientific research, most dudes (and they're inevitably all dudes) who are frequenting these blogs, are in fact from the era when crawlpappy was considered "new school". it's basic demographics; guys who are too old to make it out to shows, too bogged down with family life to spend a bunch of money on records anymore, and who feel that they've been giving and giving to music for so long that "music owes them back".

shit, i know for a fact that ole' proven hollow up there was playing hackey sack in high school back in the 9-0. phil fay fock...holla.

Ha, ha, yes that describes me to a "T". In my case I also have the added complication that I live in a provincial hamlet that's far away from all "touring routes" that would send good bands my way.

Phil, I totally agree that the Temple Body 7" was great, too. Someone should rip that one and post it on his blog ;-)

shit, i've been found...AGAIN! i could never hackey sack, my pants/shorts (shants/ports) were far too large. it's impossible to hackey sack in what for all intents and purposes was a full denim skirt.

phil, i will always find you. it's your musk that keeps me mere steps behind you...

and by the by, sonn av krusher is playing shows in october, november, december, and january, so feel free to attend one or all of them. i feel that our performance is lacking if your windmilling is not there, clearing "da pit". for reals.

wow! i remember seeing this in stores, though i never had any info on it and in my younger years i based way too much on name..

it seems like these guys have a lot of love here and knowing that Phil and Sven both back it hard mean i am downloading now...

i just got off a pretty serious Swarm stretch that may need to be revisited, unless these guys can bring the hurtin'

thanks!

If anyone is interested in a Crawlpappy CD, I would gladly trade it for something. I am only mildly into the band and have no sentimental value attached to the CD. Hit me up on our blog if you'd like it.

Crawlpappy was one of my favorite bands from New York. The S/T and Deluxe have had umeasurable amount of influence on my band Chowder. Rick Roy's style was so unorthodox and chaotic yet way more controlled than Greg Ginn who I've heard him compared to. I was lucky enough to catch them live a few times in the Baltimore/DC area back in the early 90's and they were amazing always! Along with Bl'ast! they are one of the bands I miss the most.

Thanks for the shout/comment. Looks like I need to search out some Chowder and give you guys a listen then.

Thanks for putting this up!, I had never heard the 2 comp tracks except for "Grey" which appears on the European pressing of the s/t EP on RAID Records along with 3 other tracks not on the Blackout one, "Duality","Man of the Hour" & "Molotov".

Very few bands to me capture the feeling that CRAWLPAPPY has, their sound and lyrics were real and you could tell what they sang about they had lived.
