When I went to college I had a friend whose nickname was “Mal”, after Mal Sondock an American DJ who in the early 80s presented the Top 40 pop hits on the regional radio station where we both grew up. Mal was given his moniker by some of his high-school friends to reflect the fact that he used to proselytize about music. Throughout college, he and I used to trade mix-tapes, each of us trying to convert the other to what we were currently into. Mal had extensive knowledge of everything “Industrial” and made me mixes that ranged from scraping noise to ethereal ambient sounds, while I pestered him with The Melvins and straight-up hardcore. I think we both enjoyed making the mixtapes much more than listening to what the other had cooked up. While I enjoyed the process and many of the individual songs on these mixtapes, I can’t recall that either of us ever said “hey can you give me more from artist XYZ?”. There was one exception though. On one of these tapes I had included “Good luck charm” from Shade Apart’s “Neon”, and a couple of days/weeks later Mal comes and asks me to tape the whole album for him. Naturally, I was shocked. As it turned out his girlfriend really liked the song, but since she was a snooty bitch she didn’t ask me herself, but rather sent him to ask me for the record. I know this anticlimactic ending completely ruins the whole story, but it’s the type of stuff that I still remember 15 years later (I guess you had to be there…).
Anyway, I always liked this record, although I have a hard time describing why. The music is the type of post-hardcore that was en-vogue in the early 90s in the wake of the grunge explosion. However, this album takes it a step further, probably because Shades Apart were never typical hardcore to begin with. They released their self-titled debut in 1988 on the classical hardcore label Wishingwell, but even that album is more Descendents or Dag Nasty than Youth of Today.
“Neon” is very moody and melancholically with a couple of ballads (and very opaque post-hardcore lyrics…). But it also has great melodies and riffs that chug along quite nicely, including well accentuated Bad Religion-style dual vocal harmonies. This all comes out very nicely because the whole album is superbly produced. This is probably even more noteworthy because Neon was released on the small label SKENE! Records, a DIY label out of
Shades Apart had 2 more full-lengths on Revelation, which were OK, but not particularly great and veered too much into the Powerpop genre for me. The first of these, “Save it” (1995), gained them quite some exposure because it featured a pretty uninspired and forgettable cover of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love”. It all just seemed very calculated and Ready-for-College-Radio. In any case it worked, because shortly thereafter they signed with a major (Universal) and released 2 more albums. The song “Stranger by the day” was even featured in one of the American Pie movies. However, by the time of their 2nd Revelation LP I had already lost all interest in them, but “Neon” has always stayed with me. My personal favorite from this album is the ballad “Good Luck Charm”; it always puts me in a somber mood.
So, if your girlfriend likes Dag Nasty or Farside (or even the later Shades Apart), check this out.

Hey, do you have the first Shades Apart LP??? I have been looking for that one for a while. Super catchy melodic stuff in a Reason To Believe sort of way.
Jeff SKENE! was a great guy to have around here back in the early 90s. Always super nice and put out some sweet and under rated records. Also some pretty awesome ones as well. The last I heard he moved out to Cali and has been running Fat Wreckords for the last 10 yrs or so.
Good blog. Keep it up.
Thanks! I do have their self-titled LP. I never quite liked it as much as Neon though, even back in the day when Shade Apart's sound was still novel. But no doubt about it, it's a pretty damn good record. I'll upload that here later tonight or so. Remind me if I forget to do it in the next few days...
shadesapart was fricken amazing. but the revelation ones and the last ones were pretty boring i admit. the first LP was one of my faves. also, they had a 12" on sunspot records which was quite good. people usually don't name it when mentioning them for some reason, i guess cuz sunspot wasn't really a huge label or anything. i think the 12" is called "dude danger" or something. anyway, check it out if you like more of the neon vibe.
i remember going to the first new bedford fest "back in the day" and shadesapart was the "headliner." i swear to you, nobody there knew who they were. it was like me and 2 other guys (jaysin?-ha) that were like "fuck yeah! shadesapart!" people were like "who are these old dudes playing powerpop?!" it was funny. but they were great. i think they played after bloodlet or something....haha. good times. the kids just don't understand.
I agree, those kids today, they don't know what's good ;-)
I have known for quite a while that the "Dude danger" EP exists, but I don't remember ever seeing it (you know, back in the days when I still frequented record shops), and I have sadly never heard it. But since it came out right between their first LP and Neon I have to assume that it is good. Any chance that you can upload that?
i have to admit to only being aware of Shades Apart through their Rev Records releases and those never sat well with me.
I will check this one out. anything in a "Reason to Believe sort of way" is bound to be at least mostly cool... and plus, Phil likes it. Phil barely likes anything!
^_~
been a long time fan of shades apart, and being from the east coast gave me the great opportunity to see them a few times during the early to mid 90s. very powerful stuff! great blog, thanx for posting!
i'll have to dig through the boxes and get dude danger out. it is seriously good.
if someone have all the covers (front-inside-back-inlay-cd) could send them to my mail (watch my username), please?...thanks
Hey, I have burned copies of old Skene records, like Awake, Dog Tired, The Peoples Court, and Anger Means. I jkust got to figure out how to post things and then I'll send you a link.
Oh man, that would be much appreciated! Spread the love!
And with regard to uploading files: A lot of people (me included) like Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/).
Setting up an account and uploading is very easy with them, plus they don't make the downloaders wait for the links to push their online ads. Their free service has a few limitations (e.g. individual files can't be bigger than 100MB, but for the occasional, small volume uploader like me they are really good. Thanks again, I am looking forward to hearing that old stuff again (Peoples court, he, he!)
Thanks for the help! Here are some links. Let me know if they work.

Adam, fantastic! Thanks so much! I just finished downloading and have listened to a few of these gems already. The Dog Tired 7" was a favorite of mine for a long, long time. It's great to hear this again.
I have a big favor to ask: Do you have a digital camera or a way to scan in the cover art (song title)? If so, could you take a couple of pictures and send them to me at
luciferyellow@lycos.com. ??
I will split the sides of each 7" into individual songs.
I don't want this to turn into too much work for you, but it would be great if I had the song titles.
Also, if you don't mind I would maybe like to post one or more of these records here (all credit to you!). You know when I find the time... But for now I am enjoying old Skene! records. Thanks again!
P.S.: Adam, the sharekey URL is apparently too long for blogger comment boxes so it got cut off. I was able to download all the files because the complete address was in the notification e-mail that I received. However, for future reference, in Mediafire in your File Manager there should be a box for each file "sharing URL" that has a considerable shorter URL and which takes you directly to the download page. Sorry, don't want to sound like a smart-ass...
I'm glad that you like them and of course, you can use them. When I get everything together I will create my own blog and use them too. I did copy the "Sharing URL" address and I thought it weird that the address was way long. I'll try to get those pics to you soon. Enjoy for now!
hey i've got the shades apart LP that combines the first 2 releases (self titled & dude danger) onto 1 CD. super hard to find. http://tinyurl.com/kupv85
